ChatGPT SEO for local businesses: a 30-day plan covering schema, listings, reviews, service pages, llms.txt and AI crawlers

Short answer: ChatGPT SEO is the work of making your business easy for ChatGPT to find, understand and trust, so it names you when a customer asks for a recommendation. For a local business that means six things: a complete Google Business Profile, matching listings across directories, steady reviews that mention your services, service pages that answer real questions, LocalBusiness schema, and crawler settings (robots.txt and llms.txt) that let AI read your site. The AI Visibility Toolkit gives you a tool for each and a 30-day plan to work through them.

Key takeaways

  • ChatGPT SEO is not a separate trick. It’s local SEO done thoroughly, plus a few technical steps that help AI crawlers read your site.
  • ChatGPT has no business directory and no form to submit. It recommends what it can verify from public sources.
  • Reviews matter more than most owners think. Locations ChatGPT recommended in SOCi’s 2026 study averaged 4.3 stars.
  • About 30 minutes a day for a month is enough for most single-location businesses to fix the foundations.

What is ChatGPT SEO?

ChatGPT SEO, sometimes called LLM SEO or GEO, is optimizing your online presence so ChatGPT mentions or recommends your business in its answers. Traditional SEO tries to rank a page. ChatGPT SEO tries to make your business the obvious, low-risk choice when the assistant builds a short list.

That difference matters, because trust is on the line. When ChatGPT recommends a plumber who turns out to be closed, the user loses trust in ChatGPT. As a result, it tends to name businesses with clear, consistent, recent evidence behind them. Your job, then, is to supply that evidence. For how SEO, AEO and GEO relate, see SEO vs AEO vs GEO.

How does ChatGPT decide which local businesses to recommend?

OpenAI doesn’t publish a ranking formula for local recommendations, so be wary of anyone who claims to have cracked one. Even so, what we can see from testing is consistent:

  • It leans on map and review data. The businesses ChatGPT names often show the same star ratings and review counts as their Google Business Profiles.
  • It cross-checks sources. If your phone number differs between Yelp and Google, that’s a reason to doubt you.
  • It quotes pages that answer questions. A service page explaining cost, timing and who it’s for gives ChatGPT something to use. A bullet list of services doesn’t.
  • It needs to read your site. ChatGPT search uses a crawler called OAI-SearchBot. If robots.txt or a security plugin blocks it, your site can’t be shown in its answers.

The ChatGPT SEO toolkit: six tools mapped to six fixes

I built the AI Visibility Toolkit after writing my ebook, because readers kept asking for something they could use straight away. In other words, each tool handles one fix. Better still, everything runs in the browser, with nothing to install or connect.

1. The 30-Day Plan

A day-by-day checklist that tells you what to do and which tool to open. Most days take about 30 minutes, and in addition, progress saves automatically. Without a plan, most owners fix one thing, get busy, and never come back.

2. Schema Generator

Simply put, schema markup tells search engines and AI exactly what your business is, where it is and when it’s open. Fill in a short form and get LocalBusiness and FAQ schema in JSON-LD, ready to paste. It warns you if anything important, like hours or service area, is missing.

3. Service Page Builder

Outlines each service page around the questions customers ask AI assistants: how much does it cost, how long does it take, is it covered by insurance, do you serve my area. Includes a title, meta description and FAQ section, so the page works for Google and AI answers at once.

4. US Citation Checklist

40+ US directories grouped by industry, with direct links and a tracker: Healthgrades and Zocdoc for doctors, Avvo for lawyers, Angi for contractors, plus Apple Business Connect and Bing Places. Run the free NAP Consistency Checker first so you know which listings need correcting.

5. Review Request Kit

Turns your Google review link into a printable QR card, with email, text and in-person request scripts and reply templates for good and bad reviews. The scripts nudge customers to mention the service and town in their own words, which is the detail AI picks up on, without scripting the review itself.

6. AI Crawler Files (robots.txt and llms.txt)

First, it generates robots.txt rules so ChatGPT, Perplexity and other AI search crawlers can read your site, plus an llms.txt file summarizing your business in plain text.

An honest note on llms.txt: it’s a proposed standard, not an official one, and Google has said it doesn’t use it. Still, it takes five minutes and does no harm, so it’s worth having, but it isn’t a magic switch. In contrast, the robots.txt part matters far more.

A 30-day ChatGPT SEO plan for local businesses

  1. Week 1, measure and fix your facts. Run the free AI Readiness Score, test five customer prompts in ChatGPT and save the answers, then correct your name, address, phone and hours everywhere.
  2. Week 2, Google Business Profile and listings. Pick the most specific category, list every service with a description, add photos, and claim Apple Business Connect, Bing Places and industry directories.
  3. Week 3, website. Rewrite top service pages to answer common questions near the top. Add LocalBusiness and FAQ schema. Fix robots.txt and add llms.txt.
  4. Week 4, reviews and mentions. Start a steady review routine, reply to every review, and earn one or two local mentions such as your chamber of commerce or a community blog.
  5. Day 29, measure again. Retake the readiness score and rerun the same prompts. Compare against day one.

ChatGPT SEO mistakes I see most often

  • Asking ChatGPT about your own brand name. Of course, it’ll say something about you. That says nothing about whether it recommends you to strangers.
  • Blocking every AI bot “to be safe.” Blocking search crawlers removes you from the answers you want to be in.
  • A services page that’s just a list. Instead, AI needs sentences it can quote.
  • Chasing a “#1 in ChatGPT” guarantee. After all, answers vary by wording, location and day. Nobody can honestly promise a spot.

DIY toolkit or hand it to someone?

The toolkit fits if you run a US business serving a local area, can spare about 30 minutes a day for a month, and can edit your website or know someone who can. Plus, it costs $29 once, with no subscription.

If you’d rather someone else looked, the AI Visibility Audit covers ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, compares you with three local competitors and gives a written fix plan. Frequently asked questions

What is ChatGPT SEO?

ChatGPT SEO is optimizing your business’s online presence so ChatGPT mentions or recommends you in its answers. For local businesses it focuses on a complete Google Business Profile, consistent listings, recent reviews, question-answering service pages, schema markup and allowing AI search crawlers.

Can I submit my business to ChatGPT?

No. Unlike Google, ChatGPT has no business directory or submission form. It builds recommendations from public information it can find and verify, such as your Google Business Profile, reviews, directory listings and website.

Does llms.txt help with ChatGPT SEO?

It may help a little and costs almost nothing to add, but llms.txt is a proposed standard, not an official one, and Google has said it does not use it. Allowing AI search crawlers in robots.txt matters much more.

Is ChatGPT SEO different from local SEO?

Mostly no. In fact, the same foundations drive both: accurate listings, a strong Google Business Profile, reviews and clear service pages. ChatGPT SEO adds a few technical steps such as checking AI crawler access and adding structured data.

How much does the AI Visibility Toolkit cost?

$29 as a one-time payment with lifetime access. It includes a 30-day plan, schema generator, service page builder, 40+ US directory checklist, review request kit and AI crawler file generators.
