AI visibility statistic: ChatGPT recommends just 1.2% of local business locations, according to the SOCi 2026 Local Visibility Index

Short answer: AI visibility is how often AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews name your business when someone asks for what you offer. It depends on what those assistants can find and trust about you: your Google Business Profile, reviews, website, and listings on other sites. For local businesses it’s now a channel of its own. BrightLocal found 45% of consumers used AI to find a local business in 2026, yet SOCi found ChatGPT recommended only 1.2% of locations studied.

Key takeaways

  • AI visibility is about whether assistants name you, not where you rank. Assistants give two or three names, not ten links.
  • Assistants build it from public evidence about your business, so you can improve it without ads or special access.
  • Also, visibility differs by assistant. In SOCi’s 2026 index, Gemini recommended 11% of locations, Perplexity 7.4% and ChatGPT 1.2%.
  • You measure it by asking customer-style questions on a schedule and tracking which businesses the assistants name.

What is AI visibility?

AI visibility is a measure of presence in AI-generated answers. For example, when a customer asks “who’s the best orthodontist in Columbus?”, assistants mention a business with strong AI visibility, describe it accurately and, ideally, recommend it.

However, people often lump three different things together:

  • Mentioned: the assistant knows you exist and can describe you.
  • Cited: the assistant links to your website as a source.
  • Recommended: the assistant suggests you as a good choice for the customer’s request.

For a local business, though, recommendation is the one that actually brings in calls. In fact, an assistant can cite a business without recommending it, and recommend a business without citing its website at all.

Why AI visibility matters for local businesses in 2026

Customers used to compare a page of results. Now, however, many open ChatGPT, ask a question, and call the first name they get. For instance, BrightLocal’s 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found 45% of US consumers had used an AI tool for a local recommendation in the past year, up from 6% the year before, making AI the third most-used source behind Google and Facebook.

At the same time, AI is much pickier than Google. For example, SOCi’s 2026 Local Visibility Index looked at around 350,000 locations. Brands appeared in Google’s local 3-pack about 36% of the time, but ChatGPT recommended just 1.2% of them. So if you’re not in that small group, the customer simply never hears your name.

How do ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI choose which businesses to name?

None of these companies publish a formula for local recommendations. But the pattern across assistants is consistent. Specifically, they name businesses they can verify, and they check a handful of signals:

  1. Facts that match. The same name, address, phone and hours on Google, your website, Yelp, Apple Maps, Bing and Facebook.
  2. A complete Google Business Profile. Specific category, every service listed, current hours and photos. Gemini and Google AI Overviews draw on this directly, and ChatGPT’s local answers often carry the same ratings.
  3. Reviews with substance. Recent, steady, and mentioning the service and the town. Locations ChatGPT recommended in SOCi’s study averaged 4.3 stars.
  4. A website that answers questions. Clear service pages, plain-language FAQs and schema markup give AI sentences to quote.
  5. Mentions elsewhere. Local news, your chamber of commerce, industry directories and community sites act as independent proof.
  6. Crawler access. As a result, if your site blocks AI search crawlers, assistants have less to go on.

How to measure your AI visibility

First of all, you don’t need an expensive platform to get a baseline. Here’s the approach I use with clients:

  1. Write ten prompts a real customer would type, using your service and town, not your business name.
  2. Run them in a private browser window in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google.
  3. Log which businesses the assistants name, whether you appear, and which sources they cite.
  4. Repeat monthly with the same prompts. Answers shift week to week, so the trend matters more than any single check.

Then find out why you’re missing. The free AI visibility tools give you an AI Readiness Score out of 100, compare your listings for NAP mismatches, and check your robots.txt for blocked AI crawlers. I walk through each one in free AI SEO tools for local businesses.

How to get ChatGPT to recommend your business: a 5-step plan

  1. Audit what AI says about you today. Run your prompts and save the answers with a date.
  2. Fix your facts first. Correct every listing so your name, address, phone and hours match exactly.
  3. Do your Google Business Profile properly. Then claim Apple Business Connect and Bing Places, which many competitors ignore.
  4. Make your website the source of truth. One page per service, answers near the top, LocalBusiness schema, AI crawlers allowed.
  5. Earn reviews and mentions that say something. Ask every happy customer, reply to every review, and earn mentions on a few trusted local sites.

Of course, each step has more detail than fits here. My guide to ChatGPT SEO for local businesses turns this into a day-by-day 30-day plan.

Also, you don’t need technical skills. Where something is technical, there’s a template to copy or hand to your web person. If you’d rather work with interactive tools than a book, the AI Visibility Toolkit turns the same method into six browser tools.

Frequently asked questions

What is AI visibility?

AI visibility is how often AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews mention or recommend your business when someone asks for a product or service you offer. It depends on the public information those assistants can find and trust about you.

How is AI visibility different from SEO?

SEO aims to rank web pages in a list of results. In contrast, AI visibility is about getting a mention in a single generated answer, which usually lists only two or three businesses. The foundations overlap, but AI leans more heavily on consistent listings, reviews and third-party mentions.

Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend my business?

There is no paid placement for organic ChatGPT recommendations and no submission form. Recommendations come from public information about your business, so improving that information is the only reliable route.

How long does it take to improve AI visibility?

For example, assistants can pick up fixes to listings and your Google Business Profile within weeks. However, reviews and outside mentions take a few months to build. Nobody can honestly guarantee when, or whether, a specific assistant will recommend you.

Is the ebook for my type of business?

I wrote it for businesses that depend on local customers, including dental offices, medical clinics, law firms, plumbers and HVAC, roofers, salons, restaurants, real estate agents and marketing agencies.
