Type a word or two. You'll see matching categories, with the most specific ones first. Specific categories usually beat general ones.

Your shortlist

Google lets you pick one primary category and up to 9 more. The primary category matters most, so choose the one that describes your main service most precisely.

This is a starter list of common local categories, not Google's full list of several thousand. Always confirm the exact name in the category box of your Google Business Profile, where Google shows the current options as you type. Runs in your browser; nothing you type is sent to us.

What is the Google Business Profile Category Finder?

The EduTechToday Google Business Profile Category Finder is a free tool that helps you choose the most specific primary category, plus up to nine additional categories, for your Google Business Profile. It labels each option as general or specific and builds a shortlist you can copy.

How to use the Google Business Profile Category Finder

  1. Type what your business does, such as “kids dentist” or “AC repair”.
  2. Review the matches. Specific categories are marked in green.
  3. Add one category as Primary and the other services you genuinely offer as Additional.
  4. Copy your shortlist and confirm each exact name in your Google Business Profile’s category box.

Why your primary category matters so much

Google uses your primary category to decide which searches you’re relevant for. A “Pediatric dentist” competes for kids’ dentist searches that a general “Dentist” may miss. AI assistants that draw on Google’s local data are influenced by the same signal.

How to choose

  • Pick the most specific category that describes your main service as your primary.
  • Add additional categories only for services you actually offer.
  • Don’t add categories just because competitors use them.
  • Check your top-ranking competitors’ categories for ideas, then decide on fit.

About this list

Google maintains several thousand categories and updates them regularly. This finder covers common local business categories as a starting point. Always confirm the exact wording in your Google Business Profile, where Google suggests the current options as you type.

Why I built this

If I could change just one setting on most local business profiles, it would be the primary category. I regularly see dentists listed as plain “Dentist” when they mostly do kids’ or cosmetic work. Picking the most specific category that fits your main service is free, takes a minute, and directly shapes which searches you appear for.
