As 2019 reaches its end, WhatsApp is also ending on Windows phones. WhatsApp formally cut support for its Windows phone app today — a transfer that was initially announced earlier this year. This also comes just some weeks after Microsoft officially ended support for Windows 10 Mobile.
“Because we will not actively develop for these platforms, some options might stop functioning at any time,” WhatsApp said in a May 7 blog post. Whereas WhatsApp may continue to work for some, you’ll likely encounter bugs as time wears on. Moreover, it will no longer be possible to obtain WhatsApp for Windows phones from the Microsoft Store.
WhatsApp was one of many last major platforms to support Windows telephones nonetheless. Facebook, WhatsApp’s parent firm, already dropped support for the Facebook and Instagram apps on Windows phones a while in the past. And with Windows 10 Mobile already within the grave, Microsoft has shifted its cellular efforts to a robust set of app choices across iOS and Android.
WhatsApp users can proceed to use the app on iOS and Android devices, as well as through the WhatsApp desktop app for Windows 10.
